Estera Żeromska
Professor Estera Żeromska is a member of the Asian Observatory at the Center for International Relations. She is a professor and Japanese studies, specializing in Japanese theater, literature, and culture. She graduated from the University of Warsaw, where she also earned her doctorate (1994) and postdoctoral degree (2004). She received her professorship in 2015.
She has visited Japan several times as a scholarship holder from the Japanese Ministry of Education and the Japan Foundation. She has given guest lectures at Japanese universities (Osaka University in Osaka, Toyo University in Tokyo, and Yamaguchi University in Yamaguchi). From 2007 to 2024, she served as director of the Institute of Oriental Studies (until 2000, the Department of Oriental Studies) and head of the Department of Japanese Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
She has published books such as Japanese Theatre: Return to the Past (1996) and Maska na mojego językach mojego teatru. From Prehistory to the Rise of Noh Theatre (2003, Wojciech Bogusławski Award), Classical Japanese Theatre: Roots and Metamorphoses – Volume 1: Noh, Kyogen; Volume 2: Kabuki, Bunraku (2010, “December 2010 Book of the Month” Award awarded by “Magazyn Literacki KSIĄŻKI”), Modern Japanese Theatre. From Kabuki to Shinpa, or the Troubles with Realism (2022). Awarded by the Japanese government with the Order of the Rising Sun, Golden Rays with Rosette (2018).
