“The prolonged war is not working in Putin’s favour – most of Russia’s resources are engaged in military operations, and the Russian economy is bleeding out,” said Dr Małgorzata Bonikowska, President of the Centre for International Relations (CSM), in an interview with Wirtualna Polska News.

“The war is slowly exhausting Russia’s ability to fight. Four to five years is the maximum — but this depends on continued support from the European Union for Ukraine’s defence,” she added.

In her latest commentary for Wirtualna Polska, Dr Bonikowska analysed the military and economic situation of the Russian Federation after three years of war with Ukraine. She emphasised that the Russian economy is operating under conditions of long-term mobilisation, consuming an ever-increasing share of the country’s financial and human resources.

According to the President of CSM, Russia maintains its war capabilities mainly thanks to its adaptation to sanctions and support from third countries. However, in the medium term, its potential will inevitably diminish. “Europe must remain consistent and united in supporting Ukraine — this is the only way to preserve strategic balance and contain the consequences of Russian aggression,” concluded Dr Bonikowska.
