“We are currently witnessing a global competition for critical and strategic raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, coltan, as well as nickel, copper, and rare earth metals. From Greenland to Serbia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, this race involves China, the United States, Russia and Europe. The challenge lies in the fact that Beijing has dominated this market since the 2000s. Now, Washington is attempting to reverse this situation. The European Union is also striving to secure its interests by forging agreements with countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Serbia. However, the fight for critical resources is just one part of the broader great power rivalry, with superpowers increasingly behaving like the empires of old,” said Dr Bruno Surdel on the program “How We Got Here” in a discussion with Jan Deresz on TVP World.
