Dr Małgorzata Bonikowska, CIR’s President, in an interview on TVP World highlights the urgent need to focus on the northern border, specifically the Baltic Sea, as a crucial area for security. While much attention has been focused on the eastern border, the Baltic Sea has gained strategic importance, especially with Sweden and Finland joining NATO, effectively making it an “internal lake” of NATO. However, Russian-controlled areas like St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad (Królewiec oblast) remain key challenges to regional stability.
The issue goes beyond the sea itself, encompassing the protection of critical infrastructure such as undersea pipelines, cables, and ships. Dr Małgorzata Bonikowska also underscores the increasing risk of hybrid threats, where attacks may not be overt but could involve destabilising GPS signals and endangering flights or other operations over the Baltic. She emphasises the importance of unity and strategic planning among the Baltic states to safeguard regional security.
