Dr Bonikowska explained: “From the perspective of others, both the U.S. and China and the rest of the Global South, we are seen as part of the West, even though for some Western European countries we are still the East. However, we are part of the global West and have a strong case in dialogue with it. For example, some countries in the region, like Poland, did not have colonies, which can be an important asset in global discussions, especially in the context of historical experiences of imperialism. We were subject of colonization by Russia. This shared experience can be a valuable argument in global dialogues. Therefore, I would focus not on formal structures, but on the individual potential of individual countries, operating in the broader context of the European Union.”
