Dr Bonikowska explained for the TVP World: “Russia’s stance as an adversary to the West has been clearly defined, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russia perceives the West as an enemy, and this is a deliberate position they have chosen. This situation is especially dangerous for open societies like those in Western democracies, where freedom of speech is a core value. In contrast, Russia operates under an authoritarian regime, similar to many other non-democratic countries around the world.
It’s important to recognise that democracies are in the minority globally. Out of around 200 states on Earth, only about 70 have democratic systems. This makes democratic societies particularly vulnerable, as our openness and commitment to free speech can be exploited. While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it also exposes us to new threats such as disinformation and manipulation, which are increasingly prevalent online. We must be resilient and vigilant in facing these challenges.”
